In order for a baby to take their first steps, they need support and they need someone to hold them whilst they get their balance. It takes time for a baby to start walking all by themselves and there is a lot of falling and crying involved. Having to get back up and try over and over again. It can get a bit discouraging for the baby after falling over many times when they could just crawl and not injure themselves. Once they do get a hang of walking, they can’t suddenly take big steps as we do, they have to be careful and take baby steps.
Baby Steps: noun.
“a tentative act or measure which is the first stage in a long or challenging process.”
I am a pretty clumsy person, falling over absolutely nothing is one of my greatest talents ever, also falling off things is something I’m pro at. I am known for all my accidents, once at TAFE, I was walking up stairs then somehow fell up the stairs and rolled back down, another incident at TAFE I was leaning on my chair and lost balance and smashed my head on the corner of the table behind me, fair to say both of these times I looked like an idiot and also hurt myself in the process of it all.
When I walk I am busy with looking at everything around me, focusing on everything else that is going on that I don’t watch where I am going and I stumble. It’s a regular occurrence that I am trying to fix but I get so consumed in everything else that I don’t realise what path I am heading down. Can you see where I am going with this?… I think I ought to take baby steps from now on and focus on what is important and go the right direction. Obviously when I am prone to falling, the right path can be a hard path to go down, there might be a few distractions along the way and maybe even detours but in the end I think the destination that I want to go to is going to be very rewarding.
Life is always going to pull us down at one point or another, maybe for only a short time but maybe it can pull you down for weeks/months/years leaving you with no motivation to get up and try to go about things, to try and get your life back on track. Life is full of challenges that can make us stumble, fall down or even collapse in a heap but how do we respond to that? Do we just lay on the ground waiting for someone passing by to help us and pick us up? I used to rely on people to help me get back up every time I fell, I relied on people way too much that I ended up falling over life and ended up even more lost then I was before. People are always going to make mistakes and you can’t fully depend on someone to be there for you through everything and I learnt that the very hard way. Not saying that you can’t trust people but when you fully rely on them and trust them with everything you have it can end up messy. As soon as I started taking baby steps, started taking my time with God, fully realising that He will never leave me, pressing into Him more, relying on Him more and trusting Him with everything I have things have started to change.
I have cut down on being so consumed with everything that is happening around me and have tuned into Him. I have also realised I am not racing against anyone but myself. I don’t need to rush my walk with God, by rushing it leads to all sorts of things. It’s like the story about the Tortoise and the Hare, the Tortoise was so slow but ended up winning the race as the Hare stopped to take a rest that he missed the Tortoise pass him. Sometimes we just gotta slow it down in order to get where we need to be and take baby steps.
Baby steps always moves you forward. I look back on the previous year and I remember always feeling like I wasn’t moving, that I wasn’t getting anywhere but now I can see my growth from just taking it slowly, one day at a time and spending more time with God.
“‘For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord , “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'”- Jeremiah 29:11
Do not worry about what is in store for you, or your future because God has it in His hands, He wants you to have hope and to have a future, He has such awesome plans for each and every single one of you and He wants you to know that it is okay, it is okay to fall and make mistakes and He will be there to catch you, He will never leave you and He forgives you.
‘Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you. Let me teach you, because I am humble and gentle at heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy to bear, and the burden I give you is light.”’ Matthew 11:28-30
God leads us one step at a time, one baby step at a time.
Imagine it being night time and we’re walking, it is quite difficult to make out what lays in front of us. We need some sort of light, so as the Psalmist said that ‘Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.’ Psalms 119:105, it is saying that God’s Word is a light on our path. Although He doesn’t have the high-beams on to show us the rest of the path that we are on but He gives us enough light for us to see what step we have to take next, the next baby step.
